The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the possibility of Bolsonaro's move to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.

The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from his dwelling.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist US President President Trump, prompting him to enact a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

He was determined responsible of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which included plans to assassinate Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The plot was prevented because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to take action, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the period, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
