European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
