The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but inside Together exists a intense examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when the couple move from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the allegory never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
