In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
